Jeremiah Smith of Jasper, left, baptists his son, Elijah, 10, with his wife, Erin, and daughter, Ellie, 11, at Redemption Church in Jasper on June 16. "I would say it's the most incredible feeling I've ever had: just to be able to baptize your own kids," said Jeremiah Smith. For Zeth Whitsitt of Huntingburg, his son’s baptism signifies “getting him started on the right path to Christ. It’s kind of like welcoming him into the church family,” he said. “Whatever struggles in life with beliefs, he’s got a family he can go to,” Zeth said. At Holland United Methodist Church in Holland on Nov. 24, Westyn Whitsitt, 5 months, of Huntingburg, looks at his grandmother, Laura Whitsitt, of Duff, while sitting on his father, Zeth, before his baptism.

“The baptism is a significant sign of God’s grace, of God’s presence in our life,” said Pastor Keith Chanley of Holland. “Either drawing us to him or in saving us from our sins and celebrating what God has already done.” At Holland United Methodist Church in Holland on Nov. 24, the pastor prepares to baptize Westyn Whitsitt, 5 months, of Huntingburg, seen with his mother, Makenzie, father, Zeth, godmother, Ashlan Kelley and godfather, Connor Craig, both of Huntingburg.

"That was my daughter’s Christmas tree many years ago," Eckerle said. "She didn’t want to cut the tree, so I dug it out and put it in a bucket, and she used it for her Christmas tree. And then I took it out in the yard and planted it. And it grew since then.” Marlena Sloss/The Herald
