Right: Brett helps his youngest daughter, Laney, 10, pack her lunch before school. Brett says one of the greatest challenges about being an athletic director is the hours he puts in. Some days he only sees his family in the morning before school or at night before bed. "That's kind of a price you pay, but I really fight that and try not to let that happen too often. Family's got to come first, but you gotta really work at it." From Photoshop: Brett helps his youngest daughter, Laney, 10, pack her lunch before school. Steve Sitzman, right, and his wife, Judy, sit in their barn at their property in St. Meinrad on Tuesday. Steve has been on a kidney transplant list for two years now. Because he is so close to kidney failure and can't risk getting sick, he was unable to spend Christmas with his grandchildren who had the flu. "It's kind of tough on me," Steve said. "They want to go up here all the time and do stuff. Since they've been sick, I have to stay away from them. I don't want to, but I have to. I can't afford to get sick." Steve and Judy have been married for 40 years. "It's a lot of worrying," Judy said. "It could change our whole life." Kaiti Sullivan/The Herald

Birdseye Town Marshal Benton Stroud poses for a portrait in Birdseye on Dec. 31. Benton took over in 2013 after former marshal, Bob Jenkins, died. “Initially I took it to help the town because Bob died. I made them take applications because I wanted it to all be fair, but then I decided maybe I could do some good here so I kept it. Its been an uphill fight and you don’t win any friends wearing the badge. Eventually one day I’ll give it to somebody else and they can have it. And I’ll be happy when I walk away because I’ve already made it better than I’ve found it.” Kaiti Sullivan/The Herald
