Chad Hoffman managed to go over the top of Drake Coleman, 3, in a post-game pick-up contest 25 years ago after Wednesday night's girls sectional opener. Hoffman plays for the Jasper boys' varsity team. Coleman's step-father, Tim La Grange, helps coach the boys team. Juanita uses a roller ball mouse at her desk in Jasper on Oct. 23. Juanita has rheumatoid arthritis which over time destructs her joints and in the last year, has affected her balance. Juanita has found ways to adapt to work and never let it slow her down. “I always said, if it got in the way of being able to do the job, I would quit.”

Photographs of Juanita’s parents, Dorothy and Edward Boehm, sit behind City of Jasper shot glasses on her office window sill on Oct. 23. Juanita’s first campaign for the Clerk-Treasurer position was emotional because her mother was dying from pancreatic cancer. She was able to see Juanita get elected into office and died on Dec. 31, the day before she was sworn in by her father.

Jasper Mayor Dean Vonderheide holds up yellow underwear with a winky face given to Juanita from an “anonymous” colleague at her retirement luncheon on Dec. 17. The underwear were from Maintenance Superintendent Al Kiefer who pranked Juanita with yellow smiley faces, her pet peeve, for 24 years while the two were colleagues. “We had a good time, I always picked on her,” Kiefer said.

Sister Renee cared for Juanita's parents while they were in palliative care with The Sisters of the Little Company of Mary. Juanita said she felt like she was on cloud nine during her retirement luncheon while getting to see so many friends and family members.

On her last day, Juanita was filled with mixed emotion. She said she was “glad I reached retirement, but also sad that I wouldn’t be coming back.”

Juanita leaves Jasper City Hall with her sister, Beth Waltz of Jasper, on her last day of work on Dec. 30. Juanita said that in that moment she felt the reality of her retirement and the excitement for the journey ahead hit her. “It felt like a sigh of relief. I was happy that I got to leave when I chose to leave—it wasn’t because of health reasons that I was forced to go early,” she said.

Juanita writes thank you cards to those who gave her retirement gifts at her home on Jan. 9. In her free time in retirement, Juanita has had time to reflect on her career and her decision to work. “People just thought my life would be easier if I didn’t work. But the work has allowed me to keep going,” she said.
